One of the many things that I love about my husband is that he has no problem throwing down in the kitchen with me. Health is always at the top of his list when cooking and he's got a great taste for stir-frys- always coming up with the best flavor combinations using hoisin, soy sauce, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, and more! This go-to stir fry takes just minutes to prepare and is hearty, full of fresh local vegetables from our favorite Hmong market and so versatile depending on the vegetables in season. See below for more pics, details and the recipe!
Zach's got his work-station all set up- with beer off to the side and at the ready :) |
Here we've got a great spread of carrots, jalapenos, green onions, fresh chopped garlic and thai chiles- all providing varying iterations of spice and heat |
Zach's Seasonal Stir Fry Recipe:
Bok Choy
Carrots
Market Fresh Leafy Greens
Jalapenos (optional depending on how much spice you like)
Mushrooms
Fresh Thai Basil (or regular basil depending on what's available)
Fresh chopped Thai Chiles
Fresh Chopped Ginger
Fresh Chopped Garlic
Fresh Cilantro
Protein of Choice (we used chopped chicken thighs)
Sauce (add to taste):
Use a base of sesame oil
Soy Sauce
Water
Hoisin Sauce (*preferably MSG-free)
Favorite Stir Fry Sauce (*preferably MSG-free)
Avocado oil
Preparation: *I've got Zach sitting next to me here walking me through writing this out* ;)
"Make sure to coat wok pan with base of avocado oil in order to prevent vegetables from getting dry and sticking to the pan....
Avocado oil is a great option because it is stable at high temperatures.
"Then start flavor aromatics by adding ginger, garlic and thai chili peppers. Next add a few tablespoons of soy sauce, water, sesame oil. Cook for about 3-4 minutes.... Add the rest of your vegetables in the quantities and proportions that you prefer. Then add a few tablespoons of hoisin sauce and your favorite stir fry sauce."
We look for MSG-free when choosing our hoisin and stir fry sauces. We're no experts but love experimenting with the ratio of sauces and flavors. In many ways it resembles the selections one would choose when at a Mongolian BBQ buffet. But in this case, you can be more choosey about the quality of the sauces you purchase whether you prefer lower sodium, organic, MSG-free, etc. Once you have all the ingredients prepped and sauces at the ready, this dish becomes an easy and healthy go-to for busy nights or days when you're looking to get some extra portions of veggies in. Serve with some fresh steamed brown rice and Enjoy!
Bon Appetit!
